Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative

Great news!!

FINAL Update!

Transmission power has been restored to all of Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island. Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative and contracted crews completed all work to construct the new overhead transmission line near Oregon Inlet and have energized the cable. Each of the seven villages on Hatteras Island have been removed from generator power and are now receiving power from the cooperative’s transmission lines.

Dare County officials have lifted the mandatory evacuation for all visitors to Hatteras Island, beginning at noon on Friday, August 4. All electricity conservation appeals for Hatteras Island have been lifted.

The cooperative would like to extend thanks to cooperative and contract crews for their tireless efforts to restore power, and to cooperative members and visitors of Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands for their continued patience and support during this unprecedented event. Finally, CHEC thanks NCDOT, Dare County and state officials for their continued support and resources during restoration efforts.

Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative

Thursday morning update- almost there!!

Thursday Morning Update:

Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative and contract crews continue to construct a new overhead line to restore transmission power to Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands as quickly and safely as possible.

Overhead Progress: Crews worked late into the night to connect the new overhead cables to the grid. That work is expected to be complete this morning and the cooperative will begin to energize the new line.

Next Steps: The new line will need to stay energize for several hours while the cooperative tests the cables. After testing, CHEC will begin to gradually introduce electrical load to the line. Residents on Hatteras Island in the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon and Buxton will experience outages while the cooperative works to take these circuits off of generator power and energize them with the repaired transmission line. The cooperative will work to give these villages notice of impending outages.

Timeframe: The restoration timeframe from this point forward is 1-2 days. CHEC is working with Dare County officials to coordinate the safe return of visitors as soon as possible.

Thank You: There are many people, partners and businesses we would like to thank. We are very appreciative of the support of our members, visitors, cooperative and contract crews and NCDOT.

The Wednesday night power update...

Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative

Down to 3-5 days folks!!

WEDNESDAY MORNING UPDATE. One solution chosen:

Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative and contract crews have simultaneously pursued two options for restoring permanent transmission service to Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, waiting for one solution to emerge as the fastest, safest way to restore reliable transmission service. That determination has been reached.

Overhead Solution: Constructing a new overhead transmission line from its underground point at the south end of the Bonner Bridge to the point where it meets the cooperative’s existing overhead transmission line is the most expedient way to restore transmission service to the islands. CHEC reached this determination in consultation with specialty contract crews including Lee Electrical Construction, an organization that specializes in high-voltage transmission line construction, and New River Electrical, which specializes in the highly complex processes of splicing and transitioning lines from underground to overhead.

Overhead Progress: Crews began installing the three-phase line last night. Concurrently, the specialist team from New River Electrical is executing prep work for creating the transition from underground to overhead just before the site of the damage and creating connections to the existing overhead lines that run the length of Hatteras Island.

Underground Situation: Despite PCL Construction’s tireless excavation efforts and attempts to dewater the trench at the site of the damage, trench conditions proved to be too challenging for the underground solution to be viable. PCL Construction was able to reveal all three cables, but water continued to seep into the trench making the environment unsuitable for repairs.

Timeframe: The restoration timeframe from this point forward is 3-5 days. This includes the time required for testing after all construction is complete and before transmission service can begin. CHEC is also working with Dare County officials to coordinate the safe return of visitors as soon as possible.

Thank You: There are many people, partners and businesses we would like to thank. We are very appreciative of the support of our members, visitors, contract crews and PCL Construction for leading the excavation.

Tonite's update. We are getting closer!! Thank you so much to the crews working 24/7 to get this island up and running at full capacity. Thank you so much to all the people still keeping us chugging along while we are in limbo. We all appreciate you!!
